Just Saying: Freedom is More Important Than Feelings….Defending Bill Maher and Free Speech

bird 3. jpg

Well the train for tit for tat destruction of free speech is barreling full steam ahead this today.  Yesterday, Roseanne Barr and the entire cast of her show lost their jobs over words.  Today, it is Bill Maher.

Yes, Roseanne’s tweet was disgusting, hurtful, childish and racist, but that should really not surprise anyone as the woman has made an entire career out of having a big mouth and using it.  Roseanne could be the poster child for what James wrote in the Bible about an uncontrollable tongue.

James 3: 4, 5,7

“4 And look at ships! They are so big that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are steered by a tiny rudder wherever the helmsman directs.

In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it can boast of great achievements. A huge forest can be set on fire by a little flame…..For all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures can be or have been tamed by humans, but no one can tame the tongue. It is an uncontrollable evil filled with deadly poison.”

Roseanne has apologized for her tweet, but, in the interest of eternal victim outrage and a total lack of social graces, apologies no longer mean anything.  They have become merely an admission of guilt, not evidence of a contrite heart and mind, or acceptance of the responsibility of fault.  Today, punishment with no forgiveness or redemption is the penalty for offending the non-judgmental.

It seems to me, that if Roseanne had been the Biblical woman at the well under sentence of death by stoning, when the Lord asked the crowd that whoever had no sin to cast the first stone, instead of the mob recognizing their own imperfection and dispersing, they would have rapidly fired stones at both the poor woman and Christ.

To be perfectly clear, Roseanne Barr is a role model for no one.  I do believe there are consequences for actions.  I do not feel sorry for her losing her job, but I do for the rest of her show’s cast.  They are not the first people whose jobs were unjustly lost because of words in a country governed by a constitution that protects free speech.  They won’t be the last. Many other people have been in the headlines for job loss due to speech. A few years ago it was Bill Maher.  This morning’s headlines of people wanting him fired are deja vu all over again.

I do on occasion watch the Bill Maher’s show.  I think he is a smart man.  I do not think that Bill Maher and I would ever be friends.  We are very different people. Should I ever meet Bill Maher, I have every reason to expect that we would both just stare at each other with a raised eyebrow as we slowly shake our heads.  I know that if he ever read this blog, my quoting of Biblical scripture would irritate him

I also know that he called President Trump an orange orangutan.  I know for a fact, that the president has been called far worse.  I really doubt that Bill Mahr’s colorful ape reference is the insult that is going to get the President’s undies in a bunch.  My outrage is not whether or not Mr. Maher likened the president to a primate, but that anyone would even think Bill Maher did not have the right express himself, or would try to punish him for stating his opinion.

I rarely agree with anything that Bill Maher says or thinks.  However, where Bill Maher has my unequivocal and total support is in his right to and defense of freedom of speech. I have seen him, on his show, defend the free speech of people he cannot stand and that have opinions with which he vehemently disagrees.

Bill Maher understands that it is an absolute necessity for free-speech to be protected for a society to remain free.  You protect your own freedom to speak when you stand up for everyone’s freedom of speech.

So, to all of those folks who are all hot to take away Mr. Maher’s job, because Roseanne Barr lost hers, I ‘d just like to say…hold on there!   If you really truly believe that Roseanne unfairly lost her job, I have to ask, “Since when do two wrongs make a right?”  How is taking away anyone’s freedom of speech going to protect your own?  The Bill Mahers and Roseanne Barrs of this nation have every right to say what they want whether me, you or the man in the moon like or not.

I cannot help but think that stupidest quote ever from any movie, “Love means never having to say your sorry” has become the communications goal for our nation.  The freedom of speech baby has been tossed out with the politically correct bath water, and a civil right came in a distance second to hurt feelings.

Self reflection is good for a person and for a nation.  So now would be a great time to ask whether feelings are more important than freedom?  The answer is a resounding….NO!

And remember:

1.  Never write, email, text or tweet anything that your grandmother could not read.

2. Sticks and stones may break your bones, but names will never hurt you!

Just saying….

Just Saying: False Fish Feeding Frenzy!

shark

I have been trying my very best to not comment on current events.

I held my tongue when shrimpy little arrogant mask-wearing cowards in skinny jeans proclaimed themselves to be anti-fascists by becoming violent fascists.  I watched their personal attacks and extensive property destruction on lots of videos.

I did not comment on the “Don’t Shoot!” rallies, even though multiple eyewitnesses to the actual event testified, under oath, that it never happened. Nor, did I comment last week, when it was learned, during testimony to Congress by social media giants, that a Russian trolling group had actually used social media platforms to organize the “Don’t Shoot” protests with the sole purpose of causing civil unrest in our country. Why? Just because they could.  It would be laughable….if I were Russian.

Then, too, it was amazing to have Donna Brazile confirm what many of us already knew.  The Democratic party primaries were rigged against Bernie Sanders by Hillary Clinton. Ms. Brazile’s disclosure that she felt her life was in danger after the Seth Rich murder speaks volumes.

Naturally, it would get my goat to learn there are actually college students, and others in this country, that think free speech is only allowable if it doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings.  A worse indictment of a failed and biased educational system, I can’t imagine. Sometimes, I ponder when, if ever, these all-knowing, overly-sensitive college administrators and teachers are going to figure out that their success at limiting, and in some instances eradicating conservative colleagues, thought, opinion and discussion from college campuses has only been an self-deluding and self-defeating exercise in cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

It appears that there is an inability or unwillingness to teach critical thinking skills, or at least a lesson in the Karma of what goes around comes around regarding restricting the Constitutional right to free speech.  If you restrict or outlaw anyone’s right to free speech, someday, someone will restrict and outlaw yours.  We are either all going to be free, or eventually, no one will be free.

Normally, any or all of those things could have triggered one of my….just saying….opinion blogs. However, this morning the line is way too far behind some folks to ignore.

I woke up early this morning and logged onto my computer to try and learn more about the horrendous massacre in that small Texas church.  It angered me to learn that a mentally-ill, self-proclaimed atheist, with a history of domestic assault who should never had access to any fire arm had attacked the church of his in-laws causing the deaths of 26 innocent people, including many children…one only 18-months old.  My sympathy, heart and prayers go out to the affected families and that entire community.

Then….it happened! I lit up like a Christmas tree as my eyes fell upon an article about President Trump….feeding fish!  First of all, what a stupid event to report on. Especially on a day when our country is mourning the loss of so much innocent life. It was absolutely flabbergasting that with all of the chaos and trouble in our nation and world that several media outlets took the time and chose to make the call to, yet again, maliciously doctor a video just to make fun our president.

Of course, yet again, a person only had to watch the entire unedited video to learn that Japan’s Prime Minister had fed the fish the exact same way and amount as our president.  I have included a link to the unedited video of the fish feeding for anyone who is actually interested in the truth.

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2017/11/06/anti-trump-media-makes-up-fake-story-about-overfeeding-fish-at-japanese-koi-pond.html

The atrocity committed by the shooter in Texas is pure evil. The intentional manipulative lying and disgustingly childish bullying by the media is embarrassing and shameful. They remind me of a pack of mean junior high school girls. Maybe, junior high school mean-girls training has replaced ethics courses at our college journalism schools?  It would appear so…….just saying

What is on my mind today? Clinton, DNC, Trump Dossier and the Franken-Coleman Recount

What is on my mind today?

It is a small, small world.

Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to read today’s news headlines only to see a very familiar name that I spent many hours working with one fall and winter during my sojourn at the Secretary of State’s Office.

The lawyer named in association with the Clinton campaign, DNC and the Trump Russian Dossier, is none other than Al Franken’s lead attorney for his recount ….Marc Elias.

As my old Swedish grandmother used to say in a matter of fact tone of voice, “My, but isn’t that something.”

What Is On My Mind Today? Fear, Hurricanes, Fires, Earthquakes and God

hurricane_main_194114

As a two-time cancer survivor I know a thing or two about fear.  One thing that I have learned is that fear can be addictive. The adrenaline rush of fear acts on the body much like an opiate.  Your heart and breathing rates increase as your fight and flight reflexes engage.

Sometimes,  fear feels good. Like the thrill you get when going on a carnival ride, riding a horse at a full gallop, or are jumping out of an airplane.  At other times fear can be overwhelming, such as when you get a cancer diagnosis or see your country ravaged by natural disasters or war.

Living in constant fear is awful, because fear is the worst of thieves.  It steals precious treasures…happiness, peace of mind and time.  What is worse, fear is contagious and has been weaponized.    Governments, religions and individuals often use fear to increase power, control people and receive attention.

Calamity begets fear. When disaster strikes, people, even unbelievers, feel the immediate need to put the fear of God in hearts and minds by communicating that the crisis is God’s fault, divine punishment for sinful living, or that the end of the world is coming and coming fast.

Whenever I hear that something is a sign of the end times, I find peace by turning to the Bible and re-reading the comforting words of Christ Jesus when he clearly states that no man will know when the end will be.  Only God knows, not Jesus, not any human.

Jesus further reassures us by instructing,  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains.” Matthew 24: 4-7.

There have been many, many wars, hurricanes, fires and earthquakes since Christ spoke those words almost two thousand years ago and humans are still here.   Are these the end times? I don’t know, nobody does.  What is important, is to believe that Jesus Christ is your personal savior, then, there is no reason to fear the end times. What is there to fear? Going to heaven and experiencing perfect love?

Can natural disasters be signs from God?  Absolutel!  The Bible tell us so.  The question is what is the message that God is sending?

Human’s cannot surprise God, he has seen it all before. I am pretty sure that:

  • God has been aware of humanity’s sinful ways since Adam and Eve disobeyed him in the Garden of Eden and then to make matters worse a jealous Cain put Abel under with a rock upside the head.
  • There have been hurricanes hitting coastal areas for as long as there has been oceans.
  • Forest fires have existed since lightening hit its first tree and man learned how to make fire.
  • Earthquakes in Mexico, or anywhere else, are never a punishment from God due to United States presidential election results, no matter what a Hollywood actress may believe.

This “disaster is a punishment from God” philosophy reminded me of when I was battling my cancer. I remember someone asking me what I thought I had done that God was punishing me so harshly.

After this empathy challenged person, who felt greatly blessed with good health and substantial wealth when compared to myself, a fifty year old woman stuck in a body cast, trapped in pain and a hospital bed in her living room, full of cancer and without a lot of good options, had finished suggesting that self-reflection and repentance on my part was necessary to appease an angry God, I responded.

My response then, would be the same as today, to those who suggest that disease and disaster are signs of an angry God.  I agree.  God gets angry.  He may use illness and other trials to test people, but, maybe, just maybe, he does not punish or test the sick, traumatized and devastated. Maybe he is testing the response of those around them.

Why do I believe this? Because, Jesus clearly tells me so in Matthew 25: 31-46

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,  I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

I am a strong believer in the power of prayer.  God can and does do miracles through prayer.  However, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?  Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”   James 2: 14-17

God promises to never leave or forsake us. He always keeps his promises. Christians need not live in constant fear of the end times, physical or natural disaster.  It is during those times that we should look to our Heavenly Father and take stock of our blessings. Call on him for faith, strength, courage and to grant us the peace that passes all understanding. Then, it is time to bravely roll up our sleeves and get to work helping those who need assistance.

I will always have a healthy fear of God, but I have no interest in being a “Chicken Little, The Sky is Falling!” christian. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said it best, “The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”

                                                                          ********

Prayer is a powerful. Please pray for those affected by the hurricanes, wild fires and other natural disasters.  Then, volunteer, give blood, or donate at:

What Is On My Mind Today? I Just Don’t Believe It…

bird 3. jpg

There are some things in this world that I am never going to believe.

That there is no God.

That trying to follow the ten commandments would be a bad thing.

That Bible and science are contradictory.

That vaccines cause autism.

That essential oils are essential to anything except the plants from which they are extracted.

That homeopathic medicine is equal to modern medicine.

That what pharmaceutical companies charge for drugs isn’t larceny.

That social media has been good for humanity.

That video games are better for young people than going outside and playing.

That texting isn’t the kiss-off of personal communications.

That the United States is not a great nation.

That Russia looked at all the 2016 Presidential Race candidates and said, “Trump, now, he’s the pony I’d put my money on!

That Russia doesn’t always try to meddle in our elections.

That Congressional Republicans support the president.

That Speaker Paul Ryan’s Healthcare plan has anything to do with either health or care.

That repealing and replacing Obamacare would be better for the people who need affordable healthcare than fixing it. Especially, since Republican leadership tried to repeal it time after time, year after year and all the while no one in leadership saw fit to draft a humane, fiscally responsible, workable, passable alternative.

That there are not current democratic members of Congress, and in state legislatures, from south of the Mason-Dixon Line, who had ancestors that were confederates.

That historical statues are more of a threat to a person’s mental, emotional and physical health than what is viewed on television, in video games or at the movies.

That black on black violence is less news worthy than statue intimidation.

That the average person under the age of fifty could tell the difference between a statue of a Union or Confederate General if they were placed side by side.

That the democratic party has the best interests of minority groups in mind.

That it is ever a waste of time to vote.

That sexism doesn’t exist.

That there is such a thing as a “woman’s” brain.

That female genital mutilation is ever all right.

That female subjugation is ever all right.

That all cultures and ideas are of equal value.

That law’s weren’t meant to be followed and enforced.

That there are not bad laws.

That bad laws do not need to be repealed.

That peace can be found through violence and intimidation.

That the generations that passed civil rights laws and spent a lifetime teaching children and grandchildren not to be racist are now all of a sudden racist.

That racism doesn’t exist.

That only white people can be racist.

That all police officer’s are racist.

That Antifa is peaceful and law abiding.

That white supremacists are not a threat to minorities.

That the age of enlightenment is now.

That any higher education institution should receive federal funding if they support segregation of any kind including “safe zones.”

That any higher education institution should receive federal funding if they discriminate against any group…minority or majority.

That past generations should be known only by their faults.

That the people on earth now are just the smartest ever.

That freedom of speech is not under attack in our public squares, institutions and places of work.

That political correctness hasn’t gone off the rails.

That ideological social media censorship doesn’t exist.

That theater arts majors know how the run the world and what’s best for everyone.

That mainstream media strives to report news factually and without bias.

That truth is not close to being declared officially dead.

That everything is relative and there are no longer any absolutes.

That our society suffers from an excess of personal responsibility.

That our society suffers from an excess of self-determination.

That our society suffers from an excess of humility.

That anyone who has been married to Bill Clinton could honestly be creeped out by any man in shoe leather.

That diet Coke tastes as good as regular Coke.

That margarine tastes like butter.

That Elvis is still alive.

That if the people supporting Kaepernick don’t watch NFL football and those offended by players not standing for the national anthem continue to boycott the NFL, that it would be wise to buy advertising time during the games.

And, what set me off today….

That anyone wants to see Amy Schumer or any other member of the Schumer family naked.

Just saying….

What is on my mind today? Job Opening for White House Communications Director…..

9092615_orig

What is on my mind today….I hear there is an opening at the White House for a Communications Director.

What an opportunity for professional and personal growth! And, here I am with experience working with national, state and local press; both political parties; elected officials at state, county and local levels; and military generals. I confess, I liked the generals best.

I have written over a hundred press releases and can pump one out in minutes, in plain speak, while on the phone fielding press calls, with management standing over my shoulder.

My customer service remains professional and excellent even when subjected to a profane diatribe. I enjoy a certain amount of—goal orientated—chaos, and I have been known to successfully meet complex and difficult challenges that would arrest most folks in their tracks.

With my background as a preschool teacher, legislative staffer, assistant communications director and press secretary, I know from personal experience that the difference between toddlers and politicians is….height.

Where do I sent my resume…my country needs me!

Oh, that’s right, I’m multiple myeloma broken….darn.

What is on my mind today? Special Prosecutor…..Damn!

Election 11I do believe that this whole Russian business does call for a special prosecutor.  It is time to have an adult in the room and the issue settled.  I frankly am sick of hearing about it.

That being said, the gleefulness of the mainstream media and Democrats, as they convict the president almost daily with hearsay, reminds me of a story a veteran once told me, about himself and his best buddy.

These two young men were both stationed in Germany.  They enjoyed going out and having fun.  Heavy beer drinking and obliging women filled many an evening.

As it happened, on one of these occasions, the boys drank a bit more beer than they probably should have.  As they stumbled around dead drunk in the dark, trying to flag down a cab driver, they ran right into a very old, very ugly, very large woman.

The gal, while not having been created easy on the eyes, more than made up for that deficiency by having been blessed with a kind heart and a giving nature. She immediately offered to help the uniformed lads get a ride to her home where they could spend the night.

The boys did not remember another thing from that night.  When they awoke early the next morning they were in bed together with the ugly woman laying naked between them.

As she snored away in peaceful slumber, the soldier’s friend vigorously pointed at him and mockingly mouthed, “You did her, you did her!”

Well, my veteran friend, thought for a second about the situation.  He then decided that the best way to find out the truth was to just pull back the covers and reveal what was underneath. As he lifted up the blanket on his side of the bed, it was discovered that he still had all of his clothes on.

Then, his gleeful friend very slowly peaked under his side of the blanket only to shout, “DAMN!.”
